Identification of Alpha-glyceryl Ether Phospholipids as Major Lipid Constituents in Two Species of Terrestrial Slug.

چکیده
Since the discovery by Carter, Smith, and Jones (1) in 1958 that cr-glyceryl ether analogues of phospholipids occur in nature, many other reports of their presence have appeared in the literature (24). Until recently, however, all reported findings indicated concentrations of these lipids that were quite low. The work of Hanahan and Watts (5) and of Thompson and Hanahan (6) dealing with the bovine erythrocyte and bovine bone marrow, respectively, shows that in both of these sources the glyceryl ether lipid levels assume significant proportions, making up from 10 to 15 mole per cent of the total phospholipid fraction. In view of these findings it seemed important to investigate other organisms for their glyceryl ether content. This paper presents data showing that two species of terrestrial slug, At-ion ater and Ariolimax columbianus, contain cw-glyceryl ether phospholipids in higher levels than have been found in any other form of life.

Total lipids from liver, head, skin and muscle of Bogue were separately isolated and their composition was investigated by a combination of analytical determinations, and column and thin layer chromatography. The major components of the neutral lipid fractions from all tissues studied were triglycerides, followed by cholesterol. The triglyceride fraction of skin and head contains significant am...
متن کاملShotgun Lipidomics Identifies a Paired Rule for the Presence of Isomeric Ether Phospholipid Molecular Species
BACKGROUND Ether phospholipids are abundant membrane constituents present in electrically active tissues (e.g., heart and the brain) that play important roles in cellular function. Alterations of ether phospholipid molecular species contents are associated with a number of genetic disorders and human diseases. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS Herein, the power of shotgun lipidomics, in combinat...
متن کاملIdentification of atypical ether-linked glycerophospholipid species in macrophages by mass spectrometry.
A large scale profiling and analysis of glycerophospholipid species in macrophages has facilitated the identification of several rare and atypical glycerophospholipid species. By using liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry and comparison of the elution and fragmentation properties of the rare lipids to synthetic standards, we were able to identify an array of ether-linked phosphatidyli...
